TOP of PAGE Dedicated Hosting Servers: - Do I have full control over my server?
Yes! You have "root" or "administrative" access to your server at any time! - What is Virtual Direct' Technical Support Policy regarding Cobalt RaQ servers?
Virtual Direct provides technical support for the following standard Cobalt services and applications, when configured and managed through the Cobalt web-based administration interface:
Web server (port 80 - normal http requests) FTP server (regular publishing and anonymous FTP services) Mail services (POP accounts, SMTP services) DNS services
Feel free to consult the Cobalt Knowledgebase, where a number of support issues have already been addressed. - Can I have my own Name servers?
Yes! For a one time set up fee of $25.00 and $15.00/mo you can have ns1/ns2.yourdomain.com so that the server appears to be hosted by you, instead of us.
Note: Virtual Direct does not provide support for any configuration changes made outside of the Cobalt web-based administration interface or for any third-party applications. - What other services or applications can be run on my Cobalt RaQ server?
Even though there isn't an official list of Cobalt-supported applications, you can view a number of downloadable files that are available from Cobalt's FTP site at the following address: ftp.cobaltnet.com.
If you have an interest in running a particular application or service that isn't already installed on your server, consult Cobalt's support site at http://www.cobaltnet.com/support.
Note: Please remember that any configuration changes made outside of the Cobalt web-based administration interface, neither Virtual Direct, nor Cobalt, will be able to troubleshoot any problems which may arise. That being said, please use extreme caution when installing unsupported applications on your server. - Can I use TELNET instead of the browser interface to configure my RaQ?
In most cases, it's best if you do not use telnet to configure your server. The Cobalt Microserver was designed to work very consistently when configured and maintained through the web-based administration interface. It is very easy to adversely affect the performance of your Cobalt by making modifications to system configuration files.
Warning: The software configuration warranty of any RaQ system will be voided, if misconfigured from a TELNET session. If your server malfunctions as a result of OS modifications, Virtual Direct will charge you to repair your server. - Can I have my own security certificate instead of using yours?
Yes! Virtual Direct will purchase and install a Thawte certificate for you at your request. Thawte certificates are currently $125.00. We charge a $25.00 set up fee, which includes the cost of installing and configuring it on your server, plus ordering it. - Why do you use Linux by default instead of NT?
Linux, in our opinion, is a much better suited Operating Systems for a Web Server than NT. It has been serving the Internet for over 5 years, and it is generally much more efficient, less expensive, more compatible, and more secure than NT. Most importantly; it is much more stable. - What happens if I use more bandwidth than I'm supposed to, will I get surprise invoices or have my server shut down?
Virtual Direct never gives surprise invoices. We also do not shut servers down for intense bandwidth usage. This is the way our bandwidth policy works: Virtual Direct will sample (sample equals a data point reflecting bandwidth utilization at that particular instance) your average bandwidth utilization every 5 minutes and store those samples for a period of one month. At the end of the month, all data samples are stored from highest to lowest and the top 5% are discarded. The highest remaining data sample will then be referred to as the ``95th Percentile" number. This number will then be used as the basis in computing the bandwidth rate for that particular month over the subscribed bandwidth level. So what does this mean to you? You will NOT be charged for Internet Spikes. We subsidize the cost for you.. just another way to help make you more profitable. If you are using more then the alloted amount we will send you notifacation. You can also request bandwidth usage graphs which we E-Mail to you. - Can I run my [chat/store/MP3/etc.] software on this server?
This is one reason for getting a dedicated server - you have the whole box, you can run whatever you want to run. You will be responsible for managing, loading, buying, etc, but what software you use is up to you.
